Gene crumpled and smoothed out the piece of paper in his hand. His parent's last known address. It was from 10 years ago, and the chance that they still lived there was slim. Especially since the place looked abandoned. Abandoned for at least 5 years. The door was partially boreded up, but he doubted it would pose much of a problem. The windows were also shut off, but he didn't think he would need those. And maybe inside there was some clue as to where his parents went. He looked around the street. It seemed to be empty. He pried of the old board and pulled out the rusty nails. The door was locked, but he managed to kick it open. The door squeaked nosily as he shut it behind him. "Hellooo..." he called, even though he assumed no one was there. In fact, there wasn't really anything there at all. No furniture, no carpets, no peeling wallpaper. It's as if someone tried very hard to make sure no one could ever tell he lived here. He shuddered involuntarily. Perhaps there was something upstairs? He made his way across the dry old floor, coughing a little as dust rose up from the boards. Just as he was about to take a step, he heard something. It sounded a little like the shifting of an old house, but to Gene it sounded like someone who was trying very hard not to call attention to themselves. He crept up the stairs, but knew he had already lost the element of surprise. The next best thing was to be ready for whatever was waiting for him. He raised his fists as he finished climbing the stairs, waiting a fight, but there was no one there. This puzzled him, and he paused, wondering what he should do next.

When you're hiding up above the boards of a ceiling an old house it's hard. You think the floor you're standing on will fal any second now and you just have to take little steps at a time.
Nic was up hiding. Right exactly when she sensed someone was coming and heard the sound of the door being kicked open she dashed to the upper attic.
It was not nice in the upper attic in fact it was dusty and everything was unstable. The floor could fall anytime and her presence would be known.
Nic kept silent and tried not to move. Who was this? She made sure no one knew where she was and she was on the run from erasers they could not have found her this fast. She listened hard and she heard the ruffling of feathers.
He was tense. It was a bird kid. Not an eraser, but a bird kid. Erasers aren't that light on their steps. But just to be sure Nic stayed up. If he wanted to know he'd have to approach her first, and it's always wise to play defense than offense. She knew he knew she was there. And if things get bad well she has that escape hitch which was a small window behind her. Now she'd just have to wait...

"Hello?" he called again. He really didn't like surprises. "I know you're up here. I mean, you're kind of noisy. And I have good hearing. So you can come out of your hiding place. Unless of course you're an eraser. Then you can just stay put." He peaked into the first room. "Look, if you don't want to come out, that's fine. I'm just going to look through the house. I'll be out really soon."

'Noisy?!' Nic thought. 'Well we'll see whose noisy you stupid kid!'
Suddenly silence occupied the whole house. The only sounds Gene could hear were his own voice and the creaking of the floorboards from his footsteps. "Hello?" he called again.
The presence was gone. Well not really gone but this was one of Nic's tricks; you'd have to learn how to be stealthy and quiet if you were to escape ITEX and their top security facilities. Especially with all those erasers on your tail, hunting you down.
Now what would the kid do?

"Whatever..." Gene muttered. He opened what appeared to a be a linen closet. Nothing. Second room? An old mattress, but that was it. He turned away, discouraged. Creak, creak, creak, sqreak. The boards were noisy, but that last one had made an unusual noise. "Sqreak?" he wondered. He bent down and tugged at the edges of the board. It didn't budge. But it looked like someone had sealed it hastily, the nails were not in the right place. He stood up and slammed his foot into the board, making a hole in the mildewed wood. From that he was able to pry up the board. He pulled out an old dusty box. "This isn't yours, is it, person in the house?" He asked. "If in fact there is someone in the house, and I'm not just going out of my mind. Look, this is probably what I came for so I'll get out of your hair. Thanks."

Nic came out and showed herself "You're not an eraser nor are you a lingering kid. You're one of us. I'm Nic and you're?" she said while handing her hand out for a shake

"Hey," he shook her hand, and began to spout words like a fountain. "So, you're a bird kid? I mean, well, obviously, you've got wings. But still, I haven't seen a gen-alt since... well, since captivity." He held out the box. "Is this your box? Because if it's not your box, it's my box. Also, do you know anything about the people that used to live here? It's so weird meeting another bird kid... especially here. Maybe it's a sign?"

"I'm not a bird as you can se i've got bat wings" Nic replied stiffling a laugh and showing her wings. "No that is not my box and i do not know anything about the people here. When I arrived here this place was already empty. I may have a friend who knows about the peopke who lived here..." she paused then asked "why do you want to know about them anyways?"

He paused before answering. "They're.... my... parents. I'm fairly certain." He thought over what she said. "Wait, you might know someone who knows where my parents are? Seriously? Can you take me to him? Her? Them? Or give me, you know, their phone number, email address, fax machine, something?"

"He's dangerous." Nic answered. "You sure you want to know about him?"

Gene thought about it. The thing he wanted most in the world was to know his parents. He'd do anything. "Yes, yes I do. Tell me anything you know. I'll do anything for my parents. Anything to find them."

"i do not know much but there is a person who may know about them. I'll take you to him if you would come with me and not rush me otherwise, finding him on your own maybe too dangerous." Nic surveyed him from top to bottom. What are you a bird kid or what?" she asked
"On our journey i do things at my time and i do take sidetrips and run some business. Do not ask any further if i say no or i do not want to talk about it. Wih that said would you still want to go with me or you just want me to direct you to the guy and go on your own way?"

"Yeah I'm a bird kid," he ruffled his feathers. "Look, whatever weird... errands you have to run, that's fine. But I need to find my parents. And if you coming with me is the easiest way, so be it."

"Food... Sounds good." Gene didn't know if he could trust this strange person, but he really didn't have any other choice. He was nervous, and started making small talk. "So you're a chiropterkid?" He joked. "Micro or Mega? And by that I mean, what do you eat, blood or fruit?" He hoped it was fruit, and laughed nervously at his own thought. "I guess you eat fast food..." he shrugged.
